Our client in the utility sector decided to merge their operational support room with an existing site to help streamline their daily operations. Incorporating a high-security room within a commercial environment came with its own challenges. It was important to our client that, despite the higher levels of forced entry resistance required, the support room’s design integrated with the existing aesthetics of the building.
“The operational support room is the beating heart of our business”, says our client. “We need to be certain that the room will resist forced entry and unauthorised access attempts whilst meeting the commercial look and feel”, they explained. Our products had to blend into the existing environment while providing maximum protection seamlessly. Acoustic resistance was also important to minimise the amount of sound entering the room during working hours.
The installation had to take place in a functioning building, meaning our team had to find unique ways to move materials in and out without disrupting daily operations.

After the initial site survey and careful consideration of the client’s requirements, our team decided to install high-performance doorsets, windows and modular walling. These products are tested and certified to provide protection against experienced attempts at forced entry, acoustic resistance and life safety egress.
The modular walling was an obvious choice for this project because, on top of its tested and certified multi-threat resistance, its modular design offered quick and easy installation. A large project like this could easily disrupt daily operations, so to prevent this, the Stafford Bridge team added bespoke adjustments to overcome these unique challenges. This included the use of a crane to lift heavy elements to higher floors, saving our on-site team time.

Q: Why was it important for you to secure the operational support room?
A: The operational support room is the beating heart of our business. The team there is fully in control of our operational system.
Q: What were your specific requirements for this room?
A: It had to work with the existing infrastructure that would still give us the same level of security but allow our employees to collaborate. They are separate and secure but still within the building and part of one team.
Q: With that in mind, would you say that the aesthetics were important as well?
A: For sure. We didn’t want the team to be in a box and completely separate, and initially - before we realised we had to meet a security standard - we had planned to have them in a glass room where they were still part of the building, which would have allowed everyone to have the feeling that they were still with us. Including the windows was a good compromise, it means we can look in, they can look out and we aren’t completely separated. It’s a favourite part for many people.
Q: What improvements do you expect not just for the operational support room but also for the people who work here? What do you think Stafford Bridge solutions will help with in the future?
A: A lot of people don’t know what the team does day to day, and the environment they are currently in is not collaborative. We’ll be offering them a better working environment, and we’ll be bringing them into another site so they can collaborate when they need to and be more included.
